Worzel Gummidge
For Worzel Gummidge, we supported a BAFTA-nominated visual-effects story with creative work designed to travel well across digital campaigns and wider audience touchpoints.
Background
The Challenge
Deliver over 450 VFX shots for the BBC One Christmas specials — seamlessly integrated into a natural, live-action world.
This included:
- Invisible clean-up work
- Environmental enhancements
- A fully digital character: Winter George, the robin
The challenge wasn’t spectacle — it was believability.
The Approach
Performance-Led Animation
Winter George wasn’t just a visual effect — it was a character.
Mackenzie Crook shared footage and real-life interactions with a robin from his garden, giving the team a grounded reference point.
This informed:
- Natural movement
- Behavioural nuance
- Subtle performance details
The animation was built to feel observed — not invented.
Invisible Integration
- Live-action plates
- Green screen setups
- Final composited shots
Every element was carefully blended to ensure the CGI never broke the illusion.
Lighting, scale and interaction were all tuned to match the real world exactly.
Volume & Consistency
With over 450 shots delivered, consistency was critical:
- Matching environments across sequences
- Maintaining continuity of the digital character
- Ensuring every shot met broadcast quality standards
The Solution
A complete VFX package supporting the storytelling without ever overshadowing it.
Digital Character Creation
A believable, performance-led robin integrated seamlessly into live-action scenes.
Full Pipeline Delivery
From CGI and animation through to compositing and final clean-up.
Invisible Effects
Enhancements that support the narrative — without drawing attention to themselves.
Project context and delivery
The challenge
A familiar television character carries strong audience expectations. The digital creative needed to respect that established world while giving campaign teams flexible material that still felt engaging away from the broadcast itself.
Our response
We approached the work as an extension of the story rather than a disconnected promotion. Visual-effects craft and campaign thinking were developed together so the assets could feel cinematic, recognisable and useful across different digital formats.
What we delivered
- Visual-effects and digital creative support
- Campaign-ready visual assets
- Adaptable content for wider audience touchpoints
The outcome
The result was a coherent set of creative assets that helped the story move into digital channels without losing the character and visual quality that made the production distinctive.
